Next-Generation Additive Manufacturing
Location: San Jose, CA (Onsite) | 10–20% Travel
About the Role
We are developing next-generation additive manufacturing systems for advanced optics—enabling complex geometries, faster iteration cycles, and new classes of materials. This is a foundational leadership role for an experienced engineering leader who can translate emerging technologies into scalable, high-performance products. You will operate at the intersection of mechanical engineering, optics and photonics, laser-based manufacturing, and new product development. We are looking for a hands-on builder who thrives in a fast-paced, startup environment and consistently delivers results.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the development of additive manufacturing platforms and advanced optical systems, including freeform optics, micro-optics, and integrated opto-mechanical assemblies
- Architect laser-based manufacturing systems, including laser-material interaction, beam delivery, scanning architectures, and precision motion systems—optimizing for throughput, resolution, and repeatability
- Translate early-stage R&D into robust prototypes and scalable production processes; drive design for manufacturability and define validation methods for optical performance, surface quality, and environmental reliability
- Build, lead, and scale a high-performing, multidisciplinary engineering team across mechanical, optical, photonics, and systems engineering
- Establish engineering processes and a culture of accountability, rapid iteration, and technical excellence
- Own the technical roadmap, execution, and delivery; make sound decisions under uncertainty while balancing innovation, speed, and practicality
What We’re Looking For
- 10–20+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, optics/photonics, laser systems, or precision manufacturing
- Proven track record of delivering complex hardware systems from concept through production
Technical Expertise
- Strong background in opto-mechanical system design, laser systems, beam shaping, and precision motion/alignment
- Experience in at least one of the following: additive manufacturing systems, semiconductor or lithography tools, optical fabrication, or metrology
- Familiarity with 3D printing technologies and micro- or nano-scale fabrication is a plus
Product Development Leadership
- Demonstrated success leading new product introduction (NPI) and transitioning R&D into production
- Strong judgment balancing performance, manufacturability, cost, and timelines
Leadership & Mindset
- First-principles thinker with strong technical curiosity
- Hands-on leader with a bias toward execution and delivery
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity and driving progress in a fast-paced environment
Ideal Background
- Experience leading engineering teams in photonics, laser systems, or advanced manufacturing environments
- Track record of building systems from concept to production
- Experience in deep-tech or startup environments
Compensation
We offer a competitive executive-level compensation package, including base salary, meaningful equity (incentive stock options), performance-based incentives, and comprehensive benefits.
